Travel has always been an important part of my life, and there are places that stay in the heart as distant dreams for years before they finally turn into reality.
For me, Lhasa in Tibet was one of those places. I am a 48-year-old woman, and together with my 16-year-old son, I embarked on this journey to Tibet - a journey I had longed for over a decade.
What once seemed impossible finally became real, and the experience was far more enriching and unforgettable than I had ever imagined.

The Role of Tibet Vista: Where Outstanding Communication Begins
From the very beginning, the entire trip was organized by Tibet Vista, and I cannot praise their work highly enough. Their communication was outstanding: all of my countless questions sent via email in the months before the trip were answered daily and without delay by a kind and professional lady from their team.
It quickly became clear that she was not only patient but also extremely well-organized and reliable. Knowing that someone was always available for assistance gave me a sense of reassurance and trust even before we left home.
Traveling to Tibet requires preparation, particularly because entry is not possible without a Tibet travel permit. This makes it essential to work with a licensed travel agency. Tibet Vista ensured that all documents were in order.
When we arrived at our hotel in China shortly before our flight to Tibet, the travel permit was already waiting for us. Along with our passports, this document was something we had to carry with us at all times while in Tibet, even for short walks. The agency explained all these details carefully in advance, which helped us feel secure and well-prepared.

First Impressions of Lhasa: From Snow-Capped Peaks to Warm Tibetan Hospitality
We enjoyed our Lhasa tour in April, and the weather surprised us with its variety - within our four days we experienced both snow and brilliant sunshine. The sight of snow-capped mountains gleaming under the Tibetan sun was breathtaking, a panorama unlike anything we had ever seen before.
From the first day, it was clear that Lhasa was not only geographically far from our everyday world, but also culturally and spiritually. The city opened up a completely different reality to us. The Tibetan people struck us as warm, kind, and very helpful. Their calmness and openness made a lasting impression on us.
However, the altitude of 3,600 meters was something my body had to battle with. On the very first day, I struggled with altitude sickness in Tibet despite taking precautions. Tibet Vista had prepared us well: they had advised us to drink plenty of water, to rest on the first day, and even to avoid taking showers as it could put extra strain on the body.
Oxygen bottles were provided to us immediately upon arrival, and even our hotel room was equipped with oxygen tubes next to the bed. Despite all this, I still felt unwell. My son, however, adapted easily - at sixteen, he seemed completely unaffected.
I was very touched by the kindness of our Tibet guide. Since I was unable to join the group on the first day, he personally made sure my son was taken care of, accompanied him throughout the activities, and kept an eye on him. This gave me peace of mind and is something I remain very grateful for.
Another thoughtful detail was the availability of drinking water in the hotel, free of charge. Each floor had dispensers, making it easy to refill bottles at any time. Such small conveniences may seem ordinary, but at high altitude, where hydration is essential, they become very valuable.

From Ceremony to Companionship: How Tibet Made Us Feel at Home
Upon arrival, we were welcomed with a traditional ceremony. This small yet symbolic gesture immediately created a sense of connection with Tibetan culture. We even received a little gift, a token of hospitality that made us feel genuinely appreciated as guests.
The group member of our small group tour was limited, which made the experience intimate and friendly. The organization remained smooth throughout the journey, and the atmosphere among our fellow travelers was light-hearted and pleasant.

Spiritual Encounters and Cultural Insights During Our 4 Days Lhasa Tour
One of the most moving experiences was observing the pilgrims. Dressed in their traditional clothing, they walked the Barkhor street Kora, performing devotional movements and rituals that we had never seen before. Watching their deep spirituality expressed so visibly was profoundly touching.
Experiencing the Tibetan monks in person was equally powerful. Listening to their chants sent shivers down my spine. It was one of those rare moments where you feel completely present, immersed in a cultural experience that words alone can hardly describe.
We also had the unique chance to witness a monk debate in Tibet. At first, it seemed as if they were arguing passionately, almost like a heated quarrel. But our guide explained that this was actually the traditional form of examination - a way for the monks to test and demonstrate their knowledge. Once we understood the background, it became fascinating to watch.

The Potala Palace - A Highlight Beyond Words
The Potala Palace was undoubtedly one of the greatest highlights of our journey. The sheer grandeur of this iconic landmark, with its white and red walls rising against the clear Tibetan sky, left us in awe.
Climbing the many steps up to the palace was not easy, especially given the altitude, but the path was designed with places to pause and rest. This allowed us to catch our breath while taking in the spectacular views of Lhasa below.
From the top, the view was nothing short of breathtaking - a panorama of mountains, city, and sky that seemed to stretch endlessly. Our guide enriched the visit by sharing not only historical facts but also stories and insights about Tibetan culture, religion, and daily life.
These explanations gave depth and context, making the palace more than just a monument; it became a living story of Tibet’s past and present.

Final Days - Tea, Dance, and Joy
Toward the end of our Tibet tour, we were invited to join a traditional tea ceremony with our guide. This was a moment of calm, reflection, and cultural intimacy. Sharing butter tea, which has such a distinctive flavor, was not just about drinking but about experiencing a tradition that has been part of Tibetan life for centuries.
Another joyful moment came when we joined a group of local Tibetans in a traditional dance. To our delight, we were encouraged to participate, and soon we found ourselves moving to the rhythm alongside them. This was one of the most heartwarming parts of the trip - not just observing a culture but becoming, for a short time, a part of it.

My Reflections
Looking back, our journey to Lhasa was everything I had hoped for and much more. It was a mixture of challenges and beauty, of awe and reflection. The altitude sickness was difficult, but it also made me appreciate the care and professionalism of our guide and the organization of Tibet Vista even more.
This trip gave me memories that I will carry for the rest of my life. From the sacred chants of the monks to the glittering snow on the mountains, from the grandeur of the Potala Palace to the warmth of the Tibetan people - every detail is etched into my heart.
I would not hesitate for a second to repeat this journey. Lhasa is not just a destination; it is an experience of the spirit, the senses, and the heart.
