Permit to Visit Mount Everest

Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain, is located on the border between China and Nepal. Whether you're taking a sightseeing Everest Base Camp tour, scenic trekking to the base camp, or adventurous mountain climbing on the Tibet (China) side, you'll need several travel documents to visit Mount Everest and the surrounding region in Tibet.

The Tibet Travel Permit and an Alien’s Travel Permit are essential for all trips to Everest in Tibet. If you plan to trek to the Advanced Base Camp beyond the ordinary Everest Base Camp or climb to the summit of Mount Everest on the Tibet (China) side, more specific permits are required for those adventures.

Please follow the guide below to learn how to get the proper travel permits for your Everest trip in Tibet.

Permits to Visit Mount Everest in Tibet

To visit Mount Everest in Tibet, which is situated in China's border area, you need to have the Tibet Travel Permit and an Alien's Travel Permit. The former allows you to enter Tibet legally while the latter permits you to visit restricted regions like Everest Base Camp.

For our clients, you may enjoy our free service to get a Tibet Permit before heading to Lhasa. As you leave Lhasa for the journey to Everest Base Camp, our Tibetan guide will help you get an Alien’s Travel Permit in Shigatse.

Once you book an Everest Base Camp tour with us, simply provide scanned copies of your passport and Chinese Visa. We’ll handle everything and secure the permits for you. Just enjoy your tour; everything is under control.

How Can I Get My Tibet Permit?

To get Tibet Permit, firstly, you need to book a Tibet tour with us. The permit issued by the Tibet Tourism Bureau only accepts applications through a local travel agency. You can’t apply for the permit by yourself.

Then, you need to find the Chinese embassy closest to you and submit your Chinese Visa application. If you enjoy a visa-free stay in China, you can escape this step.

After you get your Chinese visa, email the copies of your passport information page and Chinese Visa page to your travel consultant. He/she will help you submit the Tibet Permit application to the Tibet Tourism Bureau.

Generally, the processing of the Tibet Permit takes 8-9 business days in Lhasa. After we get your Tibet permit, we will deliver it by express to your address in the mainland of China.

Or, in some extreme cases, our staff will give it to you in person at the railway station or airport.

Note:  Please book your tour at least 21 days in advance to ensure you get the permit in time. Since the permit will be checked when you board a train or a flight to Tibet, please keep the permit properly once you receive it.

What Permits Do I Need for an Everest Advanced Base Camp trek?

If you plan to challenge your physical limit to trek from EBC (5,200m) to ABC (6,400m-6,500m), you need to apply for the Tibet Trekking Permit.

It is issued by the Tibet Mountaineering Association (TMA). However, to protect the environment of Mt. Everest, the Tibet Trekking Permit service was canceled in April 2018.

So far, there is no sign showing when it will be resumed. Yet, we promise to inform you in the first place if it becomes available.

Note: If your destination is no higher than the ABC, you can find a Tibet travel agency to make arrangements for you; otherwise, all the services must be arranged by the Tibet Mountaineering Association.

What Permits Should I Get to Climb Mount Everest on Tibet (China) Side?

Ascending Mt. Everest via Tibet is a lifetime dream for many mountaineers, although the north route in Tibet is far more challenging than the south one in Nepal.

Every April and May, mountaineers from all over the world gather together at the EBC, preparing for their tough Mt. Everest journey.

To summit Mount Everest in Tibet, you shall book the commercial Mt. Everest climbing and expedition tours organized by the Tibet Mountaineering Association. The TMA will issue the Everest Climbing Permit for you.

Conclusion

1. To the majority of tourists, the Tibet Permit and an Alien’s Travel Permit are all you need for the classic Everest Base Camp tour in Tibet.

2. To trek from EBC (5200m) to ABC (6400m-6500m), you need to get Tibet Trekking Permit. Yet, it is no longer available for the protection of the environment of Mt. Everest.

3. To climb Mount Everest in Tibet, you can only book the Mt. Everest climbing and expedition tours run by Tibet Mountaineering Association. It will issue Everest Climbing Permit for you.

As the well-established local Tibet travel agency since 1984, we offer a wide array of EBC tours for you and one-stop service for the application of all the permits within our capacity. If you plan a trip to Mt. Everest, don’t hesitate to contact us! We are always at your service.
