I decided to travel to Tibet while planning an overland trip from Indonesia to England during my year off after university. I was attracted by the beauty of the Himalayas, the unique architecture, and the region’s spiritual and religious significance. But most of all, I was drawn by the unknown. Tibet had always felt mysterious to me, a remote place full of history and meaning that I wanted to explore for myself.
How I Booked My Tibet Tour with Tibet Vista
As a foreigner, I discovered early on that independent travel in Tibet isn’t permitted. Foreign visitors are required to join an organized Tibet tour operated by an approved agency. After asking around in various travel forums and Facebook groups, I came across a strong recommendation for Tibet Vista. One traveller spoke very highly of them, describing the guides as friendly, fluent in English, and genuinely fun to be around.
That first recommendation sparked my interest, and after doing further research, comparing itineraries, prices, and reviews, it became clear that Tibet Vista offered the best value for money. I ended up choosing their 7-day overland trip from Lhasa to Kathmandu, which included a night at Everest Base Camp.
While organising my tour, I found the team at Tibet Vista to be extremely responsive and helpful. Most of my questions were answered within a day, often in great detail. Sal, in particular, was fantastic, knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely enthusiastic about helping me plan my journey.

Travelling by the Scenic Tibet Train from Chongqing to Lhasa
One of my biggest logistical concerns was how I would actually get to Tibet. As part of my overland challenge, flying wasn’t an option. Tibet Vista offered various suggestions, and actually booked a train from Chongqing to Lhasa for me. The process was incredibly smooth. I barely had to lift a finger. This level of support was reassuring, especially given the language barriers involved in Chinese train bookings.
The train journey itself was long, roughly 34 hours, but surprisingly enjoyable. I was in a soft sleeper cabin with three other passengers, all locals. Despite the language barrier, we quickly bonded using translation apps. We exchanged stories, discussed our countries, and even shared food. I tried chicken feet for the first time (not my favourite), and they were intrigued by my overland route from Southeast Asia to Europe. I’ve stayed in touch with some of them since.

Arriving in Lhasa and Settling In
When I finally arrived in Lhasa, I was met at the station by a driver from Tibet Vista and taken straight to the hotel. After 34 hours on a train, the ease of this transition was a huge relief. The hotel was clean, comfortable, and welcoming, especially since I had spent the week prior sleeping on planks of wood in the Laotian jungle! The beds were soft, the showers were hot, and plenty of drinking water was provided, which was helpful in easing the effects of altitude. The staff were kind and helpful, much appreciated after a long journey.
The first day in Lhasa was a rest day, dedicated to acclimatising to the altitude. I hadn’t experienced any major symptoms of altitude sickness, but I was grateful for the chance to slow down and take it easy. I genuinely believe that this buffer day helped me avoid the worst of the altitude-related issues.
Finally, safely arrived in the sacred Lhasa city.

Enjoyed My Lhasa Tour with a Knowledgeable Local Tibetan Guide
Our Lhasa tour was rich with cultural exploration. We visited iconic landmarks such as the Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street, and the legendary Potala Palace. For me, the Potala Palace was a standout highlight. Its grand architecture and historical significance were striking. Our guide gave in-depth explanations of each site and its role in Tibetan history and religion. It was clear that he cared deeply about Tibetan culture and took pride in sharing it with us.
At Drepung Monastery, we even had the chance to observe the monks engaging in their lively Tibtan monk debate rituals, a unique and surprisingly entertaining experience that gave real insight into Tibetan Buddhism.

Made it to Tibet Everest Base Camp from Lhasa
After Lhasa, we travelled through several locations, including Gyantse, Shigatse, and eventually Everest Base Camp. The drives between towns were long, often up to 8 hours a day, but the views made the time worth it. We passed beautiful turquoise alpine lakes, barren high-altitude deserts, and towering snow-capped peaks. If you can tolerate the long days on the road, you’re rewarded with some truly beautiful views that make for some great photos!
Everest Base Camp was the highlight of the entire trip. Watching the sunset over the world’s highest peak is surreal. A couple of us took a short hike to a viewpoint. Our guide showed us a safe route and gave us the freedom to explore. I will always remember my first Himalayan hike!

Friendships Forged on the Road
I greatly enjoyed spending time with other members of my group. Since I was travelling alone, I was nervous that I would not meet others. But Tibet Vista did an excellent job of fostering a group dynamic. On our first night, they organised a buffet dinner where we could all mingle and get to know each other. Throughout the trip, everything was done as a team, which naturally encouraged connection.
By the time we reached the farewell dinner (accompanied by a few bottles of Lhasa beer), it felt like saying goodbye to old friends. At 23, I was the youngest in the group, but I never felt out of place. The atmosphere was warm, inclusive, and open. Something I really appreciated.

Final Reflections
In the end, travelling through Tibet was one of the most memorable and meaningful parts of my overland adventure. From excellent support by Tibet Vista, to the incredible scenery, rich culture, and unexpected friendships. I have only good things to say about Tibet Vista, and if you’re considering a trip to this unique and special part of the world, I really recommend reaching out to them.
Say goodbye to the mighty Himalayas.
