Why Trekking in Tibet and Nepal Offers the Best Himalayan Views
The Himalayas stretch from northeastern Pakistan through India, Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan, and into southwest China. While this vast range offers many possibilities, the best trekking routes are mainly found in Nepal and Tibet - and here’s why:
First, Nepal and Tibet offer the greatest variety of trekking options, catering to all levels in terms of length, difficulty, and duration. Whether it’s a one-day trek from Shalu to Nartang or a 15 days Mt. Kailash trekking tour, there are routes for everyone, from beginners to seasoned trekkers.
Second, these two regions has the most breathtaking mountain views. Ten of the world’s 14 highest peaks - including Everest, Cho Oyu, Shishapangma, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Makalu - are clustered along the Sino-Nepal border, creating an unmatched panorama of towering giants.
Finally, Nepal and Tibet are more accessible and better equipped for trekking than other parts of the Himalayas. With well-developed tourism infrastructure, they offer easier access, more reliable services, and a smoother experience compared to trekking in other Himalayan regions.

Trekking in Tibet and Nepal, even with limited time, can be surprisingly easy. Some of the best treks - offering the most breathtaking views - are actually shorter routes that focus on smaller, concentrated areas rich in both scenery and adventure.
Top 3 Short Treks in Tibet
The Mt.Kailash trek, also known as the Mt.Kailash kora, is truly one of the world’s most spectacular trekking experiences. Revered as the most sacred mountain on Earth, it holds deep spiritual significance for four major religions, including Hinduism and Buddhism. This striking black rock pyramid is encircled by the holiest kora trail in both Tibet and Nepal.
The kora trek around Mt. Kailash takes three days to complete, with some challenging sections - most notably the ascent to Dolma La Pass at 5,630 meters. The trek has been accomplished by senior citizens from around the world and is regularly undertaken by Tibetan and Indian pilgrims, some of whom complete it through continuous prostration on their hands and knees.
The trek from Tingri to EBC is another popular short route in Tibet, taking just four days to cover the 70 km journey to the world’s highest mountain. Starting from Old Tingri, it is considered one of the most beautiful and even more rewarding than the longer Everest trek in Nepal.
Along the trail, Mt. Everest comes into view again and again as you cross scenic valleys and open plains inhabited by yaks and nomadic herders. This journey to one of the Himalayas’ top attractions also offers a unique glimpse into traditional Tibetan life and culture.
If you’re looking for a more moderate trek, the Shalu to Nartang trekking route is an ideal choice. Lasting just 2 to 3 days depending on your pace, it can be completed in two - but many opt for three days to better enjoy the mountain views and make the most of the experience.
Following an ancient Buddhist trade route, the trail is easily accessible from Shigatse. It winds through high passes, low valleys, and dramatic dry canyons, where towering cliffs rise above, making you feel like an ant in a vast desert landscape.

Top 2 Short Treks in Nepal
The Ghandruk Cultural Trek, which starts an hour outside Pokhara, is a three-day trek that is ideal as a short trek at any time of the year. With maximum altitudes of around 2,000 meters, acclimatization days are not needed, giving you the full time to enjoy the trekking.
The trail ascends from outside Pokhara through small hill-tribe villages after crossing the Modi Khola River on one of Nepal’s famous rope-and-wood suspension bridges. The best viewpoints of the Himalayas on the trail are at the villages of Landruk, Pothana, and Deurali.
Starting in the outskirts of Kathmandu, this 2 to 3-day trek has some superb mountain views and travels through some of the Langtang national Park’s most stunning forest regions. You trek through several ethnic Tamang villages, where the Tibetan Buddhist culture thrives in Nepal.
Another one is the Everest Mini trek, also well known as the Everest View trek, runs from Lukla, the mountain airport where the trek to EBC starts, up to Namche Bazaar and the Everest View Hotel, which has one of the best views of the mountain in Nepal.
The trek through Phakding to Namche Bazaar takes two days, and you get a third day to trek up to Syangboche, the viewpoint for Mount Everest on the sun deck of the Everest View Hotel, before heading back to Namche for the night.

Best Time for the Trek in Tibet and Nepal
Tibet has more clearly defined trekking seasons, with the best times being from mid-April to May and from September to October. During these months, the weather is dry, mild, and perfect for trekking, with day temperature ranges from 6 to 23 degrees.
Winter (December to February) is generally not suitable due to snow and ice, which can make trails dangerous. However, outside of winter, trekking in Tibet is possible year-round.
While the rainy season (July to August) brings occasional showers, the rain typically falls in the early morning or late afternoon and rarely disrupts daytime trekking. In fact, summer rain enhances oxygen levels and humidity, making the trek more comfortable.

In contrast, Nepal offers trekking opportunities throughout the year, except during the monsoon season from June to August. Heavy sub-tropical rains during this period often make trails muddy and slippery, so trekking is generally discouraged.
That said, the rest of the year provides excellent conditions. Even in winter, when higher elevations may be snow-covered, there are still many enjoyable lower-altitude trekking routes available.

How to Prepare for the Trek in Tibet and Nepal
Trekking at high altitudes in Tibet and Nepal can be physically demanding. Proper preparation requires assessing and improving your physical fitness and stamina, as well as being aware of the risks of altitude sickness in Tibet, where elevations are especially high.
A good level of fitness is essential, as mountain ascents often involve rough, uneven terrain and long hours of walking. Regular activities such as swimming, cycling, and running are excellent ways to build endurance and prepare your body for the challenges of high-altitude trekking.
It’s also important to consult your doctor before your trip to check for any underlying health issues, such as heart conditions or asthma, that could be aggravated by altitude.
Age is generally not a barrier to trekking in the Himalayas - as long as you're in good physical condition and properly acclimatized, all ages can successfully complete high-altitude routes.

How to Enjoy Travel Safety for the Trek in Tibet and Nepal
Unlike Nepal, Tibet requires all travelers to join an organized Tibet tour. And we’ll provide you with an experienced trekking guide to ensure your safety and comfort. Your well-being is our top priority, and we take great care to avoid unstable terrain.
Nepal, on the other hand, offers more flexibility. Unless you've booked a guided trekking tour, it's possible to trek independently. However, if you're unfamiliar with Himalayan trekking or the challenges of high altitude, hiring a guide is highly recommended.
The elevation gains in Nepal can be physically taxing, and without proper knowledge of when to rest and acclimatize, the risk of altitude sickness increases significantly.
Proper gear is also essential for a safe trek. Be sure to pack weatherproof clothing, waterproof layers, durable hiking boots with thick socks, an arctic-rated sleeping bag, a reliable tent, cooking equipment, and enough food supplies.
Trekking in Nepal should not be underestimated. If you’re unsure about navigation or logistics, it’s always safer and more enjoyable to hire a guide or join a tour. Contact us for more details.
