Take a Stroll along Barkhor Street and Tianhai Night Market to Enjoy Authentic Tibetan Food

After a full day of exploring Lhasa, the city’s night markets - filled with Tibetan food and snacks - offer the perfect way to relax and recharge. Among the many options, Tianhai Night Market and Barkhor Night Market are two must-visit spots you shouldn’t miss during your Lhasa tour.

Tianhai Night Market

Located in the western suburb of Lhasa, Tianhai Night Market is the largest and busiest night market in the city. Beyond the countless stalls selling snacks, barbecue, and fruits, you’ll also find shops offering fashion clothing, handicrafts, daily necessities and home appliances. It is a great spot for food lovers and for practical items like hats to make your Tibet tour more comfortable.

Snack stalls operate from the afternoon until around 5 a.m., while other shops selling clothes and daily items run from about 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Snacks and barbecue are the main attractions, featuring delicacies from all over China that bring post-dinner joy to locals and tourists alike.

Popular Tibetan snacks include yak’s blood, pink sausage, tsampa, and momo. You can also find hand-pulled beef noodles, Qinghai roast meat, and Xinjiang-style noodles with scallion, oil, and soy sauce. About 20 sidewalk stalls specialize in lamb dishes such as sautéed lamb, braised lamb, roast lamb tenderloin and leg, grilled lamb chops, fried lamb with cumin, and sautéed lamb head.

Barkhor Night Market

Located in the city center, Barkhor Street is best known for the Barkhor Kora, but it’s more than just a pilgrimage route. It is also the oldest commercial street in Lhasa with a lively night market.

At night, the street becomes full of life. You’ll see locals doing prostrations and also find places to enjoy tasty Tibetan food. Typical snacks here include rich butter tea, smooth barley wine, and nutritious tsampa. On the south side of Barkhor Street, a newly opened food street gathers many local treats. It’s a great place to try Tibetan noodles, Tibetan-style barbecue, and creamy yogurt.

Besides food, the street is filled with music from shops and the soft chanting of pilgrims. The market also sells Tibetan incense, beautiful thangka paintings, and bright jewelry. Since it’s in the city center, prices are a bit higher than at Tianhai Night Market.

Watch the Princess Wencheng Show to Discover the History and Legends of the Holy City

If you're looking for a Tibetan performance to enjoy at night in Lhasa, don’t miss the Princess Wencheng Musical Show. This large outdoor performance tells the story of Princess Wencheng from the Tang Dynasty, who married the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo over 1,300 years ago. It brings Chinese and Tibetan history and culture to life.

The show premiered in 2013 and has become a famous epic. It recreates the Tang Dynasty and ancient Tibet using drama, music, dance, and modern stage techniques. The performance includes huge sets, colorful costumes, large props, and impressive lighting and special effects.

One of the most unique features is that the real mountains outside Lhasa serve as the natural backdrop. Two large projection screens tell the story and show song lyrics in Mandarin, Tibetan, and English, so everyone can follow along.

With hundreds of performers, the show is truly grand. The mix of mountain scenery, a starry night sky, dancers, riders on horseback, and even real snow falling during the winter scene creates a magical experience.

Admire the Night View of the Potala Palace and Enjoy a Lhasa Beer at a Nearby Bar

As the most iconic landmark in Tibet, the Potala Palace offers a completely different charm at night. Thanks to a specially designed lighting system, you can admire the stunning night view and then grab a beer at a nearby bar before heading back to your hotel.

What truly makes the night view special is the layered lighting design. There are three layers of light: warm yellow at the base highlights the white and red walls; in the middle, soft white light outlines the windows and corridor pillars; and at the top, the golden roof glows in cool light, as if reaching for the stars above.

There’s even more to enjoy in summer. A musical fountain adds a lively touch, dancing in sync with the music. It draws both visitors and locals, who often join in and dance along the fountain’s rhythm. It’s a great way to soak up authentic Tibetan culture and relax.

After seeing the night view of Potala Palace, you can stroll over to Beijing Road, often called the “street of bars”, where you can drink beer in Lhasa. It is just 5 minutes walk from the Potala Palace. At night, the street comes alive with neon signs and billboards lighting up the scene.

Visit Langma Hall Like a Local and Enjoy Traditional Tibetan Music and Dance

If you're looking for something more authentic, try visiting a Nangma Hall. It is the Tibetan-style dance halls, a bit like nightclubs or discos. Locals and visitors love coming here to relax, dance, and enjoy music. The word “Nangma” is also the name of a famous Tibetan traditional group.

Inside, you'll hear Tibetan songs and see colorful dances from different regions of Tibet. People sip on Tibetan barley wine called chang, chat with friends, and raise their glasses in cheerful toasts. It’s a great way to feel the energy and spirit of life on the high plateau.

Traditional Nangma Halls offer all kinds of shows, folk dances, modern music, and more. You can also try Lhasa beer, a local favorite made from barley, yeast, and fresh Himalayan spring water, as well local snacks. The beer is crisp, smooth, and perfect for a drink after dancing.

Lhasa has many nightlife spots to choose from, such as Tianzhige, Mengbala, Western Singing and Dancing Hall, Tanggu Lafeng, Blue Huiyi, and Lhasa Soho. Most of them are near the Potala Palace, stretching from Norbulingka in the west to Jokhang Temple in the east.

Practical Tips from Our Travel Expert for Enjoying Lhasa’s Nightlife

#1. Wear warm clothes. In Lhasa, the temperature can drop sharply from day to night, especially in spring, autumn, and winter. We strongly recommend dressing warmly in the evening to avoid catching a cold, which can make your Tibet tour uncomfortable.

#2. Be careful with drinking. Bars are a great place to meet new people and enjoy the local vibe. However, we advise against drinking alcohol before you’re fully acclimated, as it can worsen altitude sickness in Tibet.

#3. Plan your visit to Potala Square early. If you want to explore Potala Palace at night, be sure to arrive before 10:00 p.m., as the lights turn off at that time. Many of the hotels we select for our guests also offer rooms with a view of the palace, so you can enjoy the night scenery from the comfort of your room.

#4. Bring some rain gear in the rainy season. During the rainy season in Lhasa, from July to August, the rains most occur during the late afternoon or at night. So if you are planning to enjoy Lhasa’s night life in this period, it is recommended to bring umbrella or rain coat in case.

#5. To buy food and souvenir at the Night market, it is advisable to bring small cash or use mobile payment, since many sellers only take cash and mobile payment since the credit card is generally not accepted.

Conclusion

During the day, Lhasa is the spiritual center of Tibet. But when the sun sets, the city reveals a vibrant and unexpected nightlife, a fun places both for locals and international tourists!

Whether you're savoring local snacks at bustling night markets, enjoying the dazzling light show of the Potala Palace, watching an epic outdoor performance, or dancing to Tibetan beats at a Nangma Hall, Lhasa offers a one-of-a-kind evening experience.
