Rutog County: Go for Birding at Serene Pangong Lake and Rutog Rock Paintings

Around 126km north of Gar, the capital city of Ngari Prefecture, lies the Rutog County. There are two main attractions in this remote place: one is the enchanting Pangong Lake, which means “long-necked swan” in Tibetan and is a renowned place for birding from May to September, such as swans, bar-headed geese, red-headed gulls, and black-necked cranes.

The other place worth visiting is the Rutog rock paintings. You can see prehistoric rock carvings with vivid antlered deer racing across the rock and three leopards in hot pursuit, as well as sacrificial rituals, farming scenes, and dancing of ancient Tibetans.
