Rongbuk Monastery: The Highest Monastery in the World
Another popular attraction on Mt. Everest in Tibet is the Rongbuk Monastery, the world’s highest monastery at 5,150 meters above sea level.
Rongbuk Monastery was founded in the 19th century by the Nyingma sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Till now, there are still monks and nuns practicing and living in Rongbuk Monastery. The ancient monastery makes your Everest tour more than a natural trip but also a visit to the spiritual center of the top of the world.
Rongbuk Monastery is also a perfect spot for shooting Mount Everest. From the square in front of the Rongbuk Monastery, you can capture breathtaking photos of the White Pagoda with the majestic peak of Mount Everest towering in the background.
It is open from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. If you arrive late at the base camp, you can visit the monastery the next morning before heading back to Shigatse. You can easily walk to the monastery from tent hotels at the base camp. If you’re staying at the Rongbuk Hotel, just cross the road and get there.

Gawula Pass: The Only Panoramic View of the Top 5 Himalayan Peaks
Gawula Pass is also a must-see attraction for Everest Base Camp tours in Tibet. On the way from Tingri to Everest Base Camp, you will stop at Gawula Pass, the only viewing platform in the world where you can see five 8,000-meter snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas together.
From left to right, you can see Makulu (8,463m), Lhotse (8,516m), Everest (8848.86m), Cho Oyu (8,201m), and Shishapangma (8,027m). With the flying prayer flags and zigzag roads beneath, the view from Gawula Pass is incredibly amazing.
Most seasons offer clear views of the Himalayan peaks from Gawula Pass. However, during the rainy season in Tibet, from June to August, there may be clouds covering the mountain tops.
The wind is strong and the temperature gets lower at the Gawula Pass at 5,210 meters above sea level. Please dress warmly and take windproof precautions while shooting and visiting here. At the same time, avoid strenuous exercise to prevent altitude sickness at such a high altitude.

In the distance, the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest, and the world’s fourth highest peak, Mount Lhotse, are like a pair of twin snow peaks. In front of you are wetlands and sand dunes, which create a unique natural landscape.
If you are curious about this unique landscape of Mount Everest, you can visit Dinggye on the way back to Shigatse from Everest Base Camp. However, the roads may be closed due to the heavy rain in summer or snowstorms in winter. So the best time for visiting Dinggye Xilin viewpoint is spring and autumn.
