Another option is to access Tibet from Nepal, which is convenient due to its close location. You may choose to take the flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa or enjoy the epic Kathmandu to Lhasa overland trip.

What travel documents are required for traveling from the U.S. to Tibet?

If you are traveling to Tibet with a U.S. passport, you need to obtain a Chinese Visa, as well as a Tibet Travel Permit, before you go.

The Chinese Visa needs to be applied for by yourself in the U.S., while the Tibet Travel Permit can only be applied for through a local travel agency, like us.

The individual application for the Tibet Permit is not accepted. Once you book your Tibet tour and receive your Chinese Visa, please provide copies of your passport and Chinese Visa to us.

After receiving the copies and getting your payment, we will apply for the Tibet Travel Permit on your behalf.

How far in advance should you book a Tibet tour from the United States?

Generally, the process of the Tibet Travel Permit takes 7 to 9 working days. Once we secure your Tibet permit, we'll send it to your hotel in China before your departure to Lhasa. Delivery typically takes 3 to 5 days.

To ensure a smooth travel, we advise booking your Tibet tour at least 21 days in advance. This allows ample time for confirming your Tibet travel plans, processing the Tibet Travel Permit, and delivering it to your specified address in the mainland of China.

For Mount Kailash tours, consider reserving your trip at least 30 days ahead. This extra time is necessary for obtaining additional travel documents like the Alien’s Travel Permit and Military Permit.

Can American tourists travel independently to Tibet?

Independent travel is not available in Tibet, but for solo travelers or those who are seeking a free exploration in Tibet, there are still ways to go.

For solo travelers, the best way is to join a small group tour in Tibet. By sharing the vehicle, travel guide, and driver with group members, you can save a lot on the cost of a Tibet tour.

For those who want to explore Tibet more flexibly, it is ideal to customize a private Tibet tour.

Is it safe for American tourists to visit Tibet?

Yes, it is!

The Tibet Autonomous Region of China is one of the safest tourist destinations in the world. While violent crime is rare in Tibet, the only thing to be concerned about is altitude sickness.

The average altitude of Tibet is over 4,000 meters, and the altitude of Lhasa is 3,650 meters. When you first arrive in Lhasa, it is easy to have symptoms of altitude sickness, such as headaches and dizziness. Usually, the discomfort will be relieved after one to two days of adaptation.

It is recommended not to arrange any sightseeing activities on the day of arrival in Lhasa, and to rest well in the hotel to adapt to the altitude. At the same time, drinking more water, and staying hydrated and relaxing can better relieve the discomfort during your stay in Tibet.

When is the best time to travel from the U.S. to Tibet?

Generally, the best time to visit Tibet is from April to early June and from September to October. During these periods, Tibet enjoys pleasant weather and excellent visibility, and is unaffected by the monsoon season, making it ideal for outdoor activities and sightseeing in Tibet.

Winter in Tibet, from November to mid-February, is the off-season for Tibet tours. However, it is the best time for a budget Tibet tour. If you visit Tibet in winter, you can save significantly and reduce your travel expenses, since hotels and flights to Tibet offer great discounts in winter. Additionally, you’ll experience fewer crowds at attractions and a more immersive Buddhist ambiance.

There are also some unique travel experiences at a specific time, like festivals in Tibet. Here are some popular festivals for your next journey to Tibet.
