In the next two days, you can explore the living quarters of the Dalai Lamas in the majestic Potala Palace, walk the sacred Barkhor kora (pilgrimage) with devoted pilgrims, worship at Tibet’s holiest Jokhang Temple, and sip Tibetan sweet tea in lively local teahouses to experience the unique Lhasa vibes. Don’t miss out on exploring Lhasa’s largest Drepung Monastery and watch dramatic Tibetan monk debates at Sera Monastery. Or, dive into the hidden temples and alleyways in the old Lhasa quarter for more unforgettable local encounters. Learn the top 14 things to do in Lhasa.

Explore Lhasa and Shigatse, Two of the Biggest Cities in Tibet: 4-5 Days
For cultural explorers who are eager to explore Lhasa and Shigatse, two of the largest cities in Tibet, you can budget 4 to 5 days for your visit.
You may spend your first three days in Lhasa for acclimatization and explore Tibet’s most iconic attractions as mentioned above. Then on day four, which is one of the highlights of this journey, you can enjoy the bus ride via the scenic G318 National Highway from Lhasa (3,650m) to Shigatse (3,800m), the traditional seat of Panchen Lamas (great scholar in Tibetan Buddhism) and the gateway to Mt. Everest.
Shortly after leaving Lhasa, you’ll reach Gampa La Pass (4,990m). From here, you’ll be rewarded with a stunning panoramic view of turquoise Yamdrok Lake, one of the three most sacred lakes in Tibet. You can take photos with lovely Tibetan mastiffs or cuddle lambs with serene Yamdrok Lake in the background. As we continue, you’ll see the impressive Karola Glacier, just meters away from the road. The glacier descends from Mt. Nojin Kangtsang (7,191m) nearby and sparkles in the sun, another photo stop you can’t miss out.
After descending from the mountains, we arrive at Gyantse, a charming historical town. The highlight here is Pelkor Chode Monastery with its famous Nepali-style Kumbum Stupa, the largest of its kind in Tibet. Finally, we reach Shigatse, the second-largest city in Tibet and home to Tashilhunpo Monastery.
On day five, you can explore the prestigious Tashilhunpo Monastery, home to the world's largest statue of Maitreya Buddha and the golden stupas of the revered Panchen Lamas. Step inside the serene Buddhist halls to reflect or meditate alongside Tibetan monks, then walk the scenic kora path around the monastery for panoramic views of the majestic Shigatse Dzong, said to be the inspiration for building Lhasa’s Potala Palace. Learn the top things to do in Shigatse.
If time allows, stroll through the vibrant Samzhubze Old Market to soak in the local Tibetan atmosphere, full of colorful stalls and friendly faces. Later, hop on the bullet train back to Lhasa (just a 2-hour ride) in time for your flight home, bringing unforgettable memories of Tibet with you.

We recommend planning your short Nyingchi tour in early spring (mid-March to early April), the best time to witness massive Nyingchi peach blossoms in full bloom. During this season, pink and white peach blossoms blanket the tranquil valleys beneath snow-capped peaks, turning Nyingchi and Bomi into a floral wonderland. You can spend 2 to 4 days visiting charming Tibetan villages from Nyingchi City to Lulang Town. Your adventure continues as you keep traveling east from Lulang Town to explore the Peach Blossom Valley, the enchanting Ranwu Lake in Bomi, and the stunning blue ice caves of Laigu Glacier, the largest oceanic glacier in Tibet. On day five, you can journey back to Nyingchi Airport for the flight home or head further west to Lhasa with a visit to breathtaking Basum Tso Lake, Ningchi’s most beautiful lake, before catching your onward flight.

Mount Kailash Is Also Suitable for a Short Tibet Trip (5–6 Days), but Not Recommended for First-Time Travelers
Located about 1,200 km west of Lhasa (3,650m) in remote western Tibet, Mount Kailash (6,656m) offers the most challenging and sacred trek in Tibet. It typically takes 10 to 15 days to travel from Lhasa or Kathmandu to complete the legendary 3-day Mt. Kailash Kora, which averages 4,500 meters above sea level.
However, if you are an experienced high-altitude trekker or someone with a natural gift for dealing with altitude ascent like Sherpas, here is the ultimate itinerary for you to plan a short Mt. Kailash pilgrimage in just around 5 to 6 days.
Day 1: Arrival in Lhasa (3,650m) by Flight.
Arrive at Lhasa Gonggar International Airport and stay overnight in nearby hotels.
Day 2: Fly from Lhasa to Ali/Ngari Gunsa Airport and Drive to Darchen
Take the early morning flights from Lhasa Gonggar Airport (3,650m) to Ali Gunsa Airport (4,274m). The flights are currently run by Tibet Airlines and Chengdu Airlines with a duration of around 2 hours. Once you arrive at Ali Airport, get transferred to Darchen (4,500m), a small town nested at the foot of Mt. Kailash as well as the starting point of the Mt. Kailash trek.
Day 3: Darchen to Dirapuk Monastery (Trek Day 1: 13km)
Enjoy the eco-bus from Darchen to Sarshung Valley to begin the challenging 3-day Mt. Kailash trek. At the end of the day, you will reach Dirapuk Monastery and enjoy the north face of sacred Mt. Kailash and meditate there to connect your soul to Tibet’s holiest mountain. Overnight at the local guesthouse.
Day 4: Dirapuk Monastery to Zutulpuk Monastery (Trek Day 2: 18km)
Today is the most challenging trek as you will push your limit to cross the Dolma La Pass (5,630m), the highest point of the 3-day Mt. Kailash trek, and pass emerald-green Lake of Compassion through a steep descent and make it to Zutulpuk Monastery for overnight stay.
Day 5: Zutulpuk Monastery to Darchen, and Visit Lake Manasarovar (Trek Day 3: 12km)
Enjoy the final and much easier trek back to Darchen to finish the 3-day Mt. Kailash trek. Then, journey to nearby holy Lake Manasarovar to meditate and purify your soul with holy water and get back to Darchen.
Day 6: Transfer to Ali Gunsa Airport for flight to Lhasa and onward flight home
What is worth mentioning is that unless you are a professional high-altitude explorer in superb health, most travelers should choose the classic 15-day Lhasa to Mt. Kailash pilgrimage small group tour or the 10-day Mt. Kailash tour from Kathmandu, as they offer you enough acclimatization days and cover all must-see top Tibetan attractions along the way with a safer and more enriching travel experience.
